Assam Behora TGFOP

HALF Assam Behora TGFOP

This production is a Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe grade tea and is of extremely good quality, a well manufactured leaf picked in the month of June. The liquor is bright and coppery in colour with a fine traditional Assamese malty taste notes.

The Behora tea estate was founded in 1908 and is location in the Dhunseri district of Assam. This was the best place for a factory because it was easier to dispatch tea via the river route which was the only way to transport teas. The leaf was naturally withered and cut into small pieces by men and then ground in huge wooden bowls and was dried in big cast iron pans over a slow fire. There was a steamer depot on the banks of the Dhunseri and all teas were shipped from this depot.

Mr Robert Stammers was based on the estate for 35 years ultimately becoming the manager. He is the father of Mrs Janet Smith and the grandfather to Richard Smith who today runs the Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. Robert Stammers oversaw the development of the estate which became one of Assam’s top tea estates, known for it’s quality tea production. Mr and Mrs Stammers retired back to the UK in 1960. This left the young generations to continue in the tea business in India and ultimately in the village of Pluckley in Kent. We are very happy and proud to be able to sell Behora estate tea!
